Please, care about your business as much as I do!

April 24, 2008

I love what I do! I really, thoroughly enjoy helping people figure out a way to market their business, products, and services in a way that can make them profitable! I love what can be done today with the internet and how you can use it to get the word out to people about a cool new product or a business that may have even been around for a while but is not getting the notice they deserve.

Social networking fascinates me. I’m just thrilled by the possibilities that exist for people to get to know others and get the word out about themselves, their line of work, or what they are passionate about. Online bookmarking and social networking sites have made it possible for the little guy to have way more power than ever before to cause change in people’s buying habits or even what they vote on in the next election.

I love that you can see almost instant results in implementing just a few simple SEO techniques and social networking strategies in the form of increased traffic to a web site. Even proper PR can help your web site traffic. I love statistics and data. When I went to school for marketing in the early 90’s, my most-enjoyable class was Market Research.

The thing that frustrates me is the amount of time it takes to get some people to reply to a PR opportunity, take a few simple moments to write a new blog, or just set up a few profiles on a few networking sites and talk about what they are supposed to be most passionate about. The very thing that they hope will support them and their families. Their own business.

When I get excited about a person’s business and tell them all the exciting opportunities that exist for them in the world of online and traditional marketing today, and they seem to understand, but then they don’t help me help them by replying to these opportunities, then they come back after a few moths time and claim that their marketing just doesn’t work; it just frustrates me. Why write a check to hire a person to do something, but not give them the things they ask for in order to get the job done?

Please, PLEASE, participate in your marketing! Get your marketing agency the things they ask for in order to do the best job for you. Return their phone calls or e-mails. After all, you pay them to do the job. You pay them to nag you. Many of us in marketing love what we do and love helping people grow their companies.

I, for one see marketing as an investment, not an expense. Why waste an investment?

And, please at least place the blame where it belongs when you are not a willing participant.
