If you are a small-mid-sized company that cannot afford to buy your own servers, host your own web site, and manage all your data internally, plus hire your own IT department, I have a great solution for you.
I’ve been using a corporate extranet to help my business partner and I stay organized.
If you have contacts you need to share; a calendar you need to keep track of for yourself, partners, and the company as a whole, and even clients; and you need a place to share large files amongst several people, whether across the room or across the globe, this will save you allot of headaches.
Whether you are a graphic designer, an architect, a non-profit, or just a real estate office, this will really help you save time.
You can even set up client accounts and manage their access.

Do you have an example usage scenario of how you use this solution in practice?

Yes, actually, I do.
Currently, I use it for tracking our contacts so my partner and I can bot access them from anywhere with an internet connection. We also use it for a corporate calendar that we can both update for up-to-the-minute updates on both our schedules, which aids in setting up meetings on the fly.
I own a MAC, she owns a PC, and it is cross platform because it is internet based.
Further, I have had clients use it to upload files to me without having to understand ftp. It’s like using a hard drive to save to. Simply set up a user account for them.

Do you have experience with BaseCamp or QTask? How does this solution compare?

I do not have experience with either of those. I can put you in touch with the people @ Luminys to answer that if you like.

another great tool you might want to consider is web based HyperOffice . in addition to contact management, calendars and document management it also has other functionalities like:
- the ability to easily publish intranet and extranet workspaces
- task management
- forums
- Outlook integration (you can access your outlook info online and keep it in sync)
- mobile access
- online surveys
- webmail client
really cool tool!
